Word to ChatGPT: convert .docx files into clean prompt text

Convert Word documents (.docx and legacy .doc) into clean, structured text you can paste into ChatGPT without broken formatting or hidden markup.

For writers, managers, and legal or HR teams working from Word documents.

Workflow

  1. 1Upload the .docx or .doc file. The document is parsed in your browser, so drafts and internal files never leave your machine.
  2. 2Keep the paste-ready Markdown default so headings, lists, and emphasis survive the conversion.
  3. 3If the document contains names, emails, or other personal details, set Sensitive text to “Find common items” before processing.
  4. 4Process the file, skim the output for structure, then paste it into ChatGPT with your instructions above or below the text.

Extraction tips

  • Headings become Markdown headings, which helps ChatGPT navigate long documents and answer section-specific questions.
  • Tracked changes and comments are not part of the extracted body text, so accept or resolve them first if they matter.
  • For contracts and policies, ask ChatGPT to quote the exact clause it relied on so you can verify against the original.

Frequently asked questions

Does Files2.AI support old .doc files?
Yes. Legacy .doc files are supported alongside modern .docx. Very old or unusual .doc variants may extract with less structure, so review the output before relying on it.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. Word files are parsed in your browser during the standard conversion flow. The document contents are not uploaded to Files2.AI servers.
Will formatting like headings and lists survive?
Yes. The default Markdown output preserves headings, lists, and emphasis so the structure stays readable for you and for ChatGPT.
What about embedded images and charts?
The converter extracts text content. Embedded images and charts are not converted, so add key figures as separate image files if you need their text via OCR.
